Grease is the iconic 1978 American musical romantic comedy film directed by Randal Kleiser, based on the stage musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. The film focusses on the lives of greaser Danny Zuko (played by John Travolta) and Australian transfer student Sandy Olsson (played by Olivia Newton-John) who become attracted to each other during a summer romance. The main characters attend Rydell High School, where Danny is the leader of the T-Birds greaser gang consisting of Doody, Sonny, Putzie, and his best friend Kenickie. Sandy is enrolled at Rydell where she meets greaser girl clique the Pink Ladies consisting of Frenchy, Marty, Jan and leader Rizzo. Later, Sandy and Rizzo meet up with Tom, a jock, and Kenickie unveils his new used car, Greased Lightnin’, which he plans on street racing after a restoration. There is also a rival gang called the Scorpions with Leo Balmudo as leader. The film covers classic themes of high school romance, US school dances, teen dramas and bullying. Grease is considered by many to be one of the best films of 1978 and while it was initially met with mixed reviews, the film has gone on to be a classic family film of the era.
